Granny Regan NFDP

 Granny Regan 1922-2010

 Sad News To Share
I have not been able to post the past few days as my Mom was hospitalized and passed away this morning.  She was 88 years old and quite a pistol.  She was born and raised in Waterford, Ireland and moved to Philadelphia at the end of World War II.  She witnessed the bombs dropping in London and worked in a munitions factory carrying live ordinance.  Always a hard worker, she spent many years working at Sears and Roebuck on the Roosevelt Boulevard and raising my sister and me. She was the proud grandmother to six wonderful grandsons.   Services will be held on Monday at St. Mary's Church in Longmeadow, MA to celebrate her life and honor her memory.  I will miss you Mom.

With Her Head Held High

With Her Head Held High
$225

8" by 10" original oil on wrap around canvas with sides painted.

Well, the M. GRAHAM oils have been a little slower to dry and don't handle the same way.  They are definitely more oily, especially the titanium white but I am getting better at knowing how much of the walnut allkyd to use. I like the richness of the pigment as well.  I liked the pose and viewing angle on the Irish cow.  She seemed very proud and determined as any good Irishman or cow should be!  I am also working on a female cardinal and hope to start another tomorrow...perhaps a scene from this area of the south.  Have a wonderful Thursday!

New Paints and Brushes

Well my efforts to have a painting to post while away stalled a bit today as I had to do a wee bit
of shopping for more needed supplies. I found out that I couldn't travel on the plane with
oil paints and decided to purchase some here and discovered a wonderful brand called M. Graham. Apparently you can take this paint with you on the plane because the toxic stuff is not used. It has
walnut oil at its base and no solvents. They even found a way to make the cadmium reds non-toxic!
I am excited to try it as I had heard of it a long time ago and found it very intriguing. The artist
who has the local shop here said she doesn't even varnish her paintings as the sheen stays nice
and even on her paintings. That is very appealing because of safety issues of always inhaling the
spray varnish. I will keep you posted on how I like it and you will see my first painting using the new paints tomorrow night. It has been very inspirational looking at the local galleries and experiencing the sights and sounds of a new place. This Friday I am going to go to the shop where I purchased the paints and sit in with a group and paint together here. I am really looking forward to it. Have a great Tuesday and thanks for checking in with me!

Lovely Iris

Lovely Iris

6" by 6" original oil on gallery wrap canvas with 1 and 1/2 inch sides painted.

Today's post if a painting that I have shown before but last night as I was
working in my studio, I saw it and decided to put it on here again.  It is one of my favorite flowers and one of my favorite paintings.  I really enjoyed painting the many folds of the iris and the combination of brush and palette knife.  I had also gotten a new color that I used in the background.  It is sort of a grayed out green that makes the flower pop. Hope you like it too!  Have an awesome day and thanks for checking in!

Cow On The Loose SOLD

  Cow On The Loose  SOLD
4" by 4" original oil on wrap around canvas with sides painted.

  • This little piece was done as a study for a bigger piece.  I worked on it using a small palette knife and that is what gave it so much texture.  Hope your Monday was a good one!  We have been busy getting Andrew ready to go to college.  I did spend time in my studio today starting three more pieces so I will have more to post this week.

Valentia Cow Strikes A Pose
9" by 12" original oil on wrap around canvas with sides painted.

  • I loved this cow's attitude in this pose.  She also looked very striking in the moonlight  and I think she knew it!  Hope you had an enjoyable weekend.  Mine was busy with my boys and Sean took my grand puppy back home today.  I sure will miss him.  I was able to get back into my studio to work on a commission that is now completed and to finish this little piece.
  • This painting is no longer available.

Splendor In The Grass

 Splendor In The Grass  SOLD

5" by 7" original oil on wrap around canvas with sides painted.

  • This cow just struck me as not having a care in the world. I enjoyed painting a cow in relaxed post for a change.  I did her in two stages, blocking in the main shapes and background and today going in and adding the texture and details.  I enjoy working this way sometimes rather than finishing it all in one sitting.  Some larger pieces like an Irish cottage scene that I am going on commission, I spend quite a bit of time and in many sessions to slowly develop the details.
  • Thank you to a reader named Jerry whose suggestion for yesterday's shrimp boat painting was drawn out of all that were sent in to me.  I appreciate all the help from all of you!
  • Sometimes I get stumped about what to paint next, so if anyone, has an idea for me about an animal, bird, flower, place, for me to paint....please send me your idea.  If you have a photograph...that is even better.  The group Artists Helping Artists run by Leslie Saeta, and Dreama Tolle Perry have give us artists a challenge of something to paint and post on September 1st that has something to do with the month of September...any ideas on that one?
  • Hope you have a fabulous Sunday!  Keep smiling and thank you for checking in with me!!

All My Boys Togerther

I won't be posting a painting today as this is the weekend before my son, Andrew, goes off to college at Virginia Tech.  All three of my boys and I are going to breakfast this morning and it will be a busy weekend getting him ready to go.  I can't believe the time has gone this quickly.  My mother used to
tell me that it would be gone in the blink of an eye and I didn't understand that until now.  I am so proud of them and excited for his new beginning...a little sad about my empty nest but will fill the
time with lots of paintings, I am sure.  Hope you have a wonderful weekend.  Oh, I am naming my
shrimp boat with a name drawn out of a hat again.  Thank you to all who participated...they were all
good suggestions and I sure appreciate it!

Tranquility

TRANQUILITY

8" by 8" original oil on artists board

The last two days I have been working on my newsletter and was so happy when I remembered that I had this painting that I had not posted yet.  It is another inspired by a trip to South Carolina and this is one that I am stumped for a name and hoped you could help me out it.  You can leave me a comment below or contact me by e-mail at normasart@cox.net.   I also got quite a few suggestions from friends on facebook last week which I really appreciate.  If you have not already signed up for my newsletter, please add your e-mail to my sign up box.  I have some valuable coupons in my newsletters and upcoming events and featured artists. Thank you to Roxanne Steed for being my featured artist in this month's newsletter.  In the article I mentioned that she and I had met at a gallery in Virginia Beach but did not say where and it was at a great gallery on Norfolk Avenue right off of Pacific Avenue called The Artists Gallery.  If you are local, you must stop by and see all the beautiful work they have and their Summerscapes show this month is all about the beach and surfing.  It runs through the 17th of August.

Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay

Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay
6" by 6" original oil on artist board

Not only are these crabs tasty...they really are pretty colorful and fun
to paint.  I am sure this one was quite happy to return to his buds in the water after his picture was taken.  This little painting would look adorable on a little easel or hung in a grouping of paintings.  The back has a place for a nail to rest in making it easy to hang.
Hope you have a wonderful Wednesday!  Thanks for checking in with me!

Cow's Got The Blues! SOLD

SOLD
 Cow's Got The Blues!

12" by 12" original oil on wrap around canvas with sides painted.

  • I remember my first art teacher describing an apple I was painting and pointing out all the colors in the apple....blue, purple, yellow, green....and I'm thinking all I see is a red apple!  She assured me that in time, I would start seeing colors and sure enough...I did and I actually started falling asleep seeing colors and finding rainbows on everyday objects...pretty cool stuff.  Now as artists, we can exaggerate those colors or even change them up as long as we keep the values the same as what we see or the degree of light and dark in the object.  The next time you see a black dog, cat, or cow, check out the fur and see if you don't see a bit of blue or purple!
  • Don't you hate if when someone sends you a bad link in an e-mail or you find one in someones blog??? Well, apparently I was guilty of that again!  In my last post, I had some errors with my links and on one on the left column for my web site.  Hopefully they are all fixed now, thanks to one of my readers who is keeping me on my toes! I am sorry for the confusion!
  • I am still working on the new pages at the top for my available paintings.  I actually have more than it shows but the link on the sidebar shows more of them.  They just don't all have the buy it now buttons.  Please contact me with questions.  I also offer multiple purchase discounts so ask me about that when you write and other payment options.
  • I am trying to include something new I learned each day that I am posting and what I came up with is a new way to fix a turkey sandwich.  Actually, my son, Andrew was fixing one for himself and I asked if he could make me one and bring it up to my studio where I was painting.  I was turkey on rye with jalapeno cheese, banana peppers, and a minute or so melting the cheese in the toaster oven.  Ooowee that was good.  Hit the spot.
  • I am also looking for studio tips to share.  Artist's helping artists are doing a radio show about it this Thursday.  Have a wonderful Tuesday!
  •  Also, some of you might have received your daily post by e-mail with a link not working properly.  I had upgraded my account and there was something that I needed to add and that has been taken care of...sorry
  • about that snafoo also!

SOLDSavannah Buggy Ride

  • 6" by 6" original oil on artist's board. This is another painting from my series of paintings from my trip to Savannah.  It was such a delightful trip with so much to see and the trolleys and horse and carriages everywhere.  I loved to hear the horses going clopety clop outside the bedroom window.
  • Today was a busy day working on my blog and teaching at Harbor's Edge.  I added to new pages to my blog.  They are both a work in progress but it is a start anyway.  The comments are just a few that I had bookmarked and the available paintings has a link to my web site where I have most of my available pieces and I will add the rest tomorrow. I also did some updating of my web site.
  • I am to think each day of anything new I have learned to share and one tip is for artists.  I learned that you can clean brushes with vegetable oil!  I am planning to travel again in a couple of weeks on a plane and did not want to search for my turpenoid natural that I usually use so this will come in handy.  If you have anything new you would like to share...please comment below this link.
  •  This weekend I will be working on my newsletter.  If you haven't already subscribed to it you can do it at my web site link above!  Hope you have a wonderful, relaxing time this weekend and do something fun!

Dawn Dude.....Wake Up!!!

Dawn Dude....Wake Up!!!

12" by 12" original oil on wrap around canvas with painted sides.

Thank you to all my readers and collectors who sent in name.  I just had my son, Andrew pull a name out of a hat....o.k....it was a bowl. I
I could not decide and I am keeping the bowl of names for future roosters which I love to paint.  I think I will ask for help once a week
as I usually have at least one painting a week that I have no clue what to name.  Anyway, thanks Sharon, Kass, Brenda, Sean,  Tracey for the
great suggestions!
I love painting roosters since my trip to Ireland a few years ago.  My cousin took me to a friend's farm who had oodles of animals and birds and his children had a great time following me around as we photographed some of the critters for future paintings.  I found the roosters to be hysterical little characters and if you have never had a chance to observe them up close, I highly recommend it!  I found this video on youtube that I think gives you an insight into what I am talking about!  Enjoy!
