Sunday's Calf

$125

6" by 6" original oil on wrap around canvas with sides painted

I was drawn to paint this calf because of her sweet face and the cutest little snout.  I bet that's not
what you call it on a cow...if anyone knows the correct term...please let me know.  Anyway, I surrounded her with a grayed down cerrulean blue and thought she looked very pretty.  Hope you are having a fabulous weekend!  I am excited to be going to Claudia Finn's Studio today.  Art Space is having an open house and I will be there with some new pieces!  Hope to see you there if you live in the area!  Contact me at normasart@cox.net for more information on this or any of my other paintings!

Almost Monkey Free!

Cappuccino Anyone?

6" by 6" original oil on wrap around canvas with sides painted.

Challenge # 6 Whip Something Up

Well I am happy to say that the monkey is only hanging on by a thread and it will only take a couple of faxes before I go to bed tonight to send this particular monkey on his way.  Whew!  It feels so good to be taking care of business...no matter how uncomfortable or painful it is at the time

My painting has been coming along steadily but the challenges have been tougher than my more known subject matter.  I was working on this piece this afternoon using a brush and a red background going for that Italian Cappuccino look and it just wasn't working!!!  Finally when I let go of sticking to my original plan, I picked up my palette knife and loosened up a bit.  I am being challenged!  And that was the idea.  I liked the idea of whipped up froth on this coffee and it brings back wonderful memories of a trip to Italy almost thirty years ago now.  I was completely enchanted with Italy and remember how wonderful it was to come to breakfast in the morning for a cappuccino and Italian bread! I still enjoy cappuccino now and again but somehow it tastes the best in Italy!

My next challenge will be a surprise...I am supposed to work on a still life with my friends tomorrow and that is one of the challenges ahead in the book.  So I may skip around a bit in the book.  I am looking forward to the one where I paint a still life out of my head...I have never done that before.  So many paintings to do and commissions to work on.  Have an awesome Friday!!!

Tomorrow I paint with friends again and then teach at Harbor's Edge.  This Sunday at noon I will be at Claudia Finn's Studio in Pembroke Mall doing a demonstration along  with fiber artist, Chris Griffin Pascuzzi.  I hope you will come out and see us!  I am also getting a studio class together in my studio on Monday evenings.  Please contact me at normasart@cox.net if you are interested in learning how to paint in either acrylic or oil.  All levels are welcome.

Cows, Monkeys, and Taxes.....

Ever had a monkey on your back and feared this monkey had been on your back so long and was so dug into you...that you might never find a way to again walk tall and monkey free???  Well, as I have shared, I have made great strides removing a couple of persistent monkeys from my shoulders....they are very broad and felt a bit lighter for awhile but I am not free yet!!!  This task is little when you actually deal with it on a regular basis. It  is my sales and use tax for the biz.  I was going to do my next painting challenge today but decided that extreme measures were necessary...I would have to work through the day and night if necessary to get on top of this monkey and pry it free once and for all.  It has involved several chats with online operators and a fax with my amended mistakes, etc but I will prevail!!! I will no longer buy my own $%$# that says that I can't figure out this stuff.
I am excited to share this painting with you...one of my favorite subjects!
Hope your day has been monkey free or at least that you are getting the upper hand in your monkey war!  Maybe I should think about painting a monkey....

Apple Gala!

Apple Gala
$125

6" by 6" original oil on wrap around canvas with sides painted.

Today was challenge # 5 was to paint fruit and to first cut it up to give it interest.... so I took a gala apple out of the frig and cut it up to make a pleasing composition.  I am really happy with it and had a lot of fun painting it! I spent the day earlier painting and visiting with my friends and giving each other inspiration and encouragement. You can see all our work at Claudia Finn's blog. Claudia Finn's Blog She is doing a really cool series of horses!  I am going to include a piece that I have been working on below that is a different kind of challenge that I am doing on my own.  I wanted to play with minimal details using line and color and it is a wonderful thing to paint something different like this.  It is a 24 by 30 so the size was a fun change also.  Hope you had a great day today.  I am a day late with my challenge but have been working on a pet portrait commission that I will share when it is finished and my client says it is o.k. as it is a surprise present.  My next challenge # 6 is to whip something up.  The example in the book is of all the items that go into making lemonade. Hmmm...not sure what I will come up with but we will see....Any ideas on what I can name this little girl?  Thanks for all the encouragement and help.

All Lit Up!

14" by 18" on gallery wrap canvas with sides painted.

Hope your weekend was awesome.  I am late in posting today as my wireless router kept going in and out.  Think it is time for a new one.  Then I remembered I had an ethernet cable!  Sometimes the old fashioned way comes in handy.  I had a great weekend of time spent with friends and doing some things around the house.  I have been keeping my weekends as days off and painting only during the week and so far that is working out pretty well.  Sometimes you need time off even from work that you love doing!  I am excited to tackle more challenges this week and also to be featured on in the Daily Painters Cafe with fellow artist Catherine Rehfeld. Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful day! If you are new to my blog, I hope you will leave a comment below and sign up for my newsletter!

Shaken Not Stirred! SOLD

Shaken...Not Stirred! SOLD

$250

6" by 12" original oil on wrap around canvas with sides painted
Well...I almost didn't work on this challenge today as my outing ran longer than I thought but I decided to at least start and before I knew it I was having a ball.  Definitely one of the most fun paintings I have done in a long time.  I may add a touch or two but all in all...it was so much fun!  Yes...I did have a bit of a martini before I began but I think it was just trying something new and I began with a blue background and most paintings I begin with red.  Some times you just have to change things up!  You would think an artist would remember to do that more often!  This was challenge #4 which was to paint something delicious and I painted my favorite martini...a cosmopolitan! I am excited to have fellow artist, Linda Popple working on this challenge also and there may be more soon! My next challenge is to paint fruit and that will be on Monday.  I will be posting something else tomorrow.  Have a great Friday!!  oh...email me at normasart@cox.net for information about purchasing this or any of my other paintings.

Just Ducky!

Just Ducky!

12" by 12" oil on wrap around canvas with sides painted.

Great day today of painting, teaching and getting some work done on income tax from this past year.  Still thrilled with Outright.com.  There is a 30 day free trial and just under 10.00 a month but it is SO easy to
keep track of everything.  I am also using Flick for keeping track of paintings, where they are located, and collectors.  Yeah for organization....finally!
It has been fun getting all the feedback for my 200 paintings challenge.  My plan is to post the next one tomorrow.  I may need to change that to Friday depending on how tomorrow goes.  I am going out to gather reference photographs and have some errands to run...then there is the sales and use tax that is due tomorrow.  I will work as fast as I can....the challenge is to paint something delicious.  That should be difficult...only to keep from eating my subject before I am finished painting!  Have a wonderful...happy day tomorrow.

Party Of One SOLD

Painting Challenge #3 Paint an Abundant Party Scene  SOLD

Party Of One
$125
6" by 6" original oil on wrap around canvas with sides painted.

Today was a very busy day with preparations for my painting session with my dear friends, Adele Loomans, and Claudia Finn.  We first had some lunch together and then got into our projects.  One of the great things about spending time with other artists is sharing ideas, inspiration, and getting some critiques on paintings that are in process and bouncing around ideas for new ones.  I had so many ideas and energy after they left that I didn't know where to start.  Luckily I had my challenge to work on and it was to work on an abundant party scene.  This is my spin on it!  One awesome dessert is all it takes to spell PARTY to me!  I decided to work with a palette knife for this one after looking at H.W. Dixon's site.  She is a wonderful palette knife painterT
My next challenge post will be on Thursday night. Challenge #4 is to paint something delicious....this could get out of hand....I have been craving something sweet all day!  I can hardly wait to get back in my studio tomorrow and work on some of my new inspirations!  Hope your week is going well. :-)

Yellow Onion

Painting Challenge #2
Paint Something You See Everyday

6" by 6" on gallery wrap canvas with side painted.

I chose this onion to paint today as I keep onions out on my counter
near where I keep my coffee maker and see them every morning.  I really enjoy the challenge
of painting onions and have not done one in a very long time.  I chose blue for the background to complement the orange tones in the onion.  My initial plan was to do it with a palette knife but found myself doing a much more realistic interpretation.  Sometimes I decide to work with brushes and end up
working with knives!  My next challenge # 3 is to do an abundant party scene.  Hmmm.... I am kind of
stumped on that one.  Anyone have some suggestions?  A great photograph?  One idea I had was to do
something out of my head...which would definitely be more child like but could be really fun too.  I love Carole Katchen's interpretation in her book for this challenge and there is another artist whose book is
called Paint Happy that could be a fun jumping off point.  She was a super realist painter who was inspired by her little two year old who began a painting with wild abandon....worked with absolute glee and then with no doubt or question knew when her painting was finished and without that inner critic that we adults cultivate...was a happy little artist!!!  I think that might be the plan....unless a different one comes to me in my dreams tonight.  :-)
The studio clean up is coming along.  Tomorrow, my friends, Adele and Claudia are coming to paint and I had wanted to have it pretty organized so we could create with some breathing room!  It should be ready when they get here and maybe I will take some pictures.  Have a wonderful day and thanks for all your comments and support!  For information on this painting or any of my other paintings, please contact me at normasart@cox.net.

6" by 12" original oil on wrap around canvas with sides painted.

I had an awesome day yesterday painting with a friend and then teaching at Harbor's Edge.  We had a full room with lots of creative projects going at once so it was really fun.  I worked on a new large piece in the morning that I will show at a later date.  Hope you have a really relaxing and enjoyable weekend!  I AM
going to tackle reorganizing my studio.  I may get brave and do a before and after picture.  To say it has
gotten out of hand and full of stuff these past years is quite an understatement.  I have been feeling weighed down by all of it and it is time to purge!  Take care and thanks for stopping by!

Painting Challenge.. .#1 Paint A Group Of "Boring" Objects

Out Of The Starting Gate

6" by 6" original oil on wrap around canvas with sides painted.
Someone reading the title and looking at this painting might not get the connection but today I began my New Year's challenge to stretch my painting skills and try out new subjects.  I wanted to quit about half way through so it is good I had put it out there that I was doing it! It was kind of painful but I am glad I did because after wards I couldn't wait to work on a rooster! :-)  I think I missed color in this the most. I actually do like my cell phone especially since I got a replacement and discovered that hanging up on everyone was not user related but a defect of the phone!  Texting is much easier now.  Anyway, I included it because a black oblong object was kinda boring.  It was a good lesson in seeing and any time you work from life instead of a photograph it is more challenging.  I will be posting my rooster tomorrow and will work on challenge #2 for Monday's post which is to Paint Something You See Everyday! Hope you have a wonderful day tomorrow and the rest of the weekend!  For information on this piece or any of my other paintings, contact me at normasart@cox.net.

My Favorite Little Bird

My Favorite Little Bird

6" by 6" original oil on wrap around canvas with sides painted.

I never tire of painting this little English Robin.  They are just too cute!  Today I had a busy day of errands, time in the studio and teaching.  It seemed only right to end up my day finishing up this little bird to post.  I have decided how to handle my challenges for the New Year.  I will continue to do portraits as they come to me and depending on how many, I may post them on another blog which I will list when I do.  Tomorrow I plan to embark on a 200 painting challenge that was inspired by a book called 200 Great Painting Ideas For Artists by Carole Katchen.  I have had it for quite some time and use if often to inspire students on their next painting but I realized it would be a great way for me to stretch and take myself out of my comfort zone.  If you would like to follow along with me and try some of the challenges on your own, that would be awesome! Tomorrow's challenge is to paint boring objects from around the house....not the most exciting one to start with but it is the first and it will make me STRETCH!  I will not be doing this for 200 days straight and will more than likely throw in the occasional cow, rooster. and
bird!  I have always wanted to try some different styles and mediums so it should be very exciting....like going through a great recipe book and making some of the dishes that you wouldn't normally try or perhaps are not the dishes you are most skilled at preparing.  The result, hopefully, will make me a better cook...I mean artist!  Cooking may be a lost cause. Contact me at normasart@cox.net for more information on this or any of my other paintings.  If you decide to do the challenge on any day and want to share your painting, let me know!

Smiling Irish Eyes

6" by 6" original oil on wrap around canvas with sides painted.

It took me a couple of tries to get going on this portrait.  As some of my readers know, my Mom passed away on August 31st.  She was 88 years old and I really miss her.  She still had her Irish brogue after
over fifty years living here in America and delighted us with so many sayings and stories  from Ireland.  I have been jotting them down as they come to me but I REALLY wish I had done it more when she was alive.  It always seems like there will be more time.  Anyway, I am pleased that I got a likeness and felt after wards that I had been able to spend some time with her and enjoy her smiling eyes once again!

6" by 6" original oil on wrap around canvas with sides painted.
Well, the weekend flew by with projects and time spent with my son Andrew but I got back to work today in my studio and working on the tax books for last year.  I am still mulling over my challenges for this year.  To help me for inspiration I am going to be painting with friends this week and taking lost of photographs.  I added a new application to my blog which shows thumbnails of some of my favorite blogs and their most recent posts.  I also changed the look of my blog a bit just to change things up.  I think the writing and links show up a little better now.  We are supposed to be getting a mixture of snow and rain tomorrow so it will be another good day of painting.  If you would like any information about this painting or any of my other piece, please contact me at normasart@cox.net

Year Of The Rabbitt SOLD

Year Of The Rabbit SOLD

9" by 12" original oil on wrap around canvas with side painted.

The rabbit has represented hope of the Chinese people for a long time. It is tender and lovely. The moon goddess Chang'e in Chinese legend had a rabbit as her pet, which stimulated the thought that only the rabbit was amiable enough to match her noble beauty. The Chinese character 'Tu' (rabbit) is part of 'Yi' (escape or leisure) indicating speed and distance. The Han people have a custom that a pregnant woman is not allowed to eat rabbit meat for fear that the child will be born with a harelip. The newborn is given paintings of children and rabbits representing that the child will have a peaceful and happy life.

I loved that the rabbit is a symbol of hope!  We all need to have hope and to be reminded that there is always hope where there is life!  The new year is a great time to be reminded of this and to focus on being kind to ourselves each day.  Thanks for checking in with me and for all your wonderful comments.

Still Beautiful At Ninety

Still Beautiful at Ninety
12 by 12 original oil
I have been working on this portrait of someone special in my family who has a beautiful spirit and kind gentle way about her.  This is still a work in progress but I wanted to post and let you know that I am working on the details of my challenges for the New Year.  Yes....I did say challenges.  I have wanted for a long time to do a series of beautiful women of mature years...anyone over forty who has lived some life and experienced both joy and loss and some time on this earth well lived.  When I finish this piece I will share more about this special lady and about the details of my challenge.  My other focus involves animals and I will begin that soon.  I need your help though...in the form of references...beautiful ladies that you will allow me to paint.  I will be doing them in a 6" by 6" format so I can complete one in a day....or two depending on the day!  I have some faces to begin with but if you would like to send me a picture, e-mail me at normasart@cox.net.  Thank you!  Welcome to my new subscribers and followers!  I love sharing this journey with my fellow artists and readers. I am excited to get the first picture to paint...a little nervous too but I will power through it....:-)

Red Headed Tanager

Red Headed Tanager

6" by 6" original oil on wrap around canvas with sides painted.

Hope you have had a wonderful New Year weekend so far.  I am back in my studio getting started on
some new pieces and finished this one up and decided to do a late in the day posting.  I love the red tanager birds and this is a different tanager sporting only a red head
For my artist followers I discovered a new book keeping site that is free for thirty days and a small monthly amount after wards.  It is called Outright.  It is very
intuitive and so far seems very simple to use.  Check it out and let me know what you think.
Yesterday I spent time at Claudia Finn's Studio at Pembroke Mall and really love her new work!  If you near Virginia Beach, stop in and see her.  She has some new angel paintings done with palette knife and my favorite of trees in her back yard.  Wonderful colors!
Thanks so much for stopping by and enjoy the rest of the weekend!   For more information on this piece or any of my other painting, please contact me at normasart@cox.net  .
