$150.
Contact me for more information on this piece.

Thought this little guy looked like he had walked a great day.  His plumage was down a bit and he looked ready for a break!  Perhaps he had too much fun on Memorial Day weekend!  I got off to a great start to this work week with a long bike ride and then spent a long time catching up on bills and all that stuff!  I enjoyed my time painting this afternoon in my clean and organized studio!  Hope you day was a good one!  I am planning on working on my shrimp boat some more tomorrow!  Have a great day!

Horse Dreams

Horse Dreams
6" by 6" original oil on panel
Contact me for purchase information.

When I was a little girl growing up in Philadelphia in a row house surrounded by concrete...I read every book I could get my hands on about horses and dreamed of owning my own.  We had a small one car garage and one dream was that I woke to find my Dad had surprised me with my own horse using our garage as a stable!
We had a park not too far from the house with a creek and I saw myself riding my horse with our hair blowing in the wind!  The dream of my own horse never came to fruition but I have had some wonderful
opportunities to ride in Ireland, England, Mexico, California, and Texas!  Puerta Vallarta was the most fun.  The horses were very tame which is to my liking but we were able to ride up into the Sierra Madre with a guide and it was quite the adventure.  So, now as an artist, I can paint horses too! They sure are beautiful creatures!
Hope you had a good weekend this Memorial Day weekend.  I had a great time at a cookout with friends and also working on projects around the house.  I painted my doors in my studio and some of the furniture.  Hope to get some pictures of it finished up here on my blog.  It sure is a much more inspirational space then it was before!  I have been having fun adding some more plants to my garden too.  I planted my hydrangeas, shasta daisies, and a lemon drop plant.  I really have the bug.
Don't forget to subscribe to my newsletter and blog posts for the special promotion I have going on for the next two months!  Thank you SO much for all your comments and continued support of my blog!

Work In Progress..

 Work In Progress...
12" by 16"

I had to smile when I typed this title...when ever I get frustrated with myself with all my quirks and imperfections, I have to tell myself...you are just a work in progress!  Hopefully making some headway!
This painting was started today during my time painting with Scott London.  He was working on a beautiful Irish landscape in palette knife and I just got started drawing this one in and then blocking in the main colors.  I still have much work to do but I got a good start.  I began with a white canvas and used a small brush and a little burnt sienna paint with thinned with turpenoid and quickly sketched in the horizon line, marsh area, shrimp boat and poles and then painted in what is called the local color.  Next painting session I will concentrate more on the value changes within each shape and adding more depth and texture.  It won't be until the end that I will add some of the wonderful details like all the masts and cool parts of the boat.  I did this scene about a year ago as a small study and I look forward to delving into it a bit more.  Hope you have a super duper weekend!  I am going to spend tomorrow on some house projects and have a pool party to go to on Sunday.

On The Go!

  On The Go!
6" by 6" original oil on panel
Available through London Square Gallery

This bird was spotted on a trip to the Outer Banks last year and I decided to do a little painting of him using a palette knife and complimentary colors! I felt a little like a shore bird today zinging all over the place...lots of errands and a trip to my favorite store...Jerry's Artarama.  I never tire of looking at wonderful full tubes of paint and so many colors!  I guess it is how some people feel like about Home Depot. Even though I was on the go most of the day and not in my studio, I still feel a great deal of accomplishment.  My refrigerator is full and I got a deal on a hydrangea plant.  I am sure some of the flowers will make their way into my paintings.  And I got to see Oprah's last show.  Wow, can't believe how many years she has been on the air and how many lives she has influenced.  It was a good show. Well, thanks so much for taking the time to check in with me.  If you ever have any questions and I am online you can get in touch with me using the meebo app to the right or contact me at normasart@cox.net . Sizzling sale for the next two months to my collectors and subscribers!
Twenty percent taken off at the time of purchase....just send me an email!

Piggy Wiggy

 Piggy Wiggy
6" by 6" original oil on panel

I just love this pig and so enjoyed painting him!  I had a wonderful weekend with friends.  I consider myself to be incredibly blessed with amazing friends!  On Saturday, my friend, Lena, who is a whiz at organization and staying on task....helped me tackle my studio.  I have shared before that I have gone through things and purged and did my best to organize but I am no match for her skills!  In five hours we had gone through everything, totally refigured my painting area, inventoried all my supplies and even rehung the doors on my closet and put down new area rugs!  I felt like a little kid going into my space today feeling so much lighter and clearer in my head!  I had a smile on my face and gratitude in my heart for my dear friend who has been in my life for over 25 years now.  She does these things because she says she loves to do them but I see it as a true gift of love.
Next, I spent the day yesterday with my friend, Pat, who I hadn't seen in awhile.  We went to the ocean front and got caught up walking the boardwalk and enjoyed the most incredible weather.  Afterwards, we stopped and visited her parents who have a beautiful garden and they were so kind to share some of their plantings.  I grew up in the city and did not really learn much about gardening but love to spend time in beautiful gardens...especially cottage gardens.  When we left, we had hostas, purple ice plant, and several other ground covers and a tall stalk that looked like a hosta but wasn't.  I was out early this morning planting everything and thinking of more things I would like to add like shasta daisies, lavender, and hydrangeas.  They are some of my favorites.  So maybe this city girl might learn to garden yet!  Claudia, your garden got me inspired to do all of this!  So special thank you to Pat and her Mom and Dad, the Kressels for sharing their garden.  More reasons to be grateful.
Now while I am feeling so warm and fuzzy, I want to share with you, my subscribers and collectors a SIZZLING SUMMER SALE!  I will be offering 20% off to anyone who is a subscriber to my daily blog posts, newsletter, or has purchased from me in the past! This sale will run for the next two months.  Contact me at normasart@cox.net to receive your discount.  I will be sending out an announcement by email about it too.  I am SO grateful to all of you!!
Have a wonderful Tuesday!

Happy Trails To You!

 Happy Trails To You!
8" by 8" original oil on panel
$225

When I looked at this fella who I had shared the biking trail with the other day, the song Happy Trails came to me from years ago watching Roy Rogers and Dale Evans with my Dad on Saturday mornings.  I am really dating myself but I loved those times spent with my Dad and the song as hokey as it is..has a fond message.  Both my parents are no longer with us but we need to make all the trails happy ones until we meet again....

You can scroll down to see my turtle friend as I found him...I am hoping he found his home....  Until we meet again...Happy Trails To You!

What's Crackin?

 What's Crackin?
6" by 6" original oil on wrap around canvas

Available through London Square Gallery

I had so much fun today...on day two of my break through!  I was a little nervous this morning wondering if yesterday could have been a one and only experience.  Ye of little faith.  I cranked up my tunes after taking Bailee for a long walk and got to work on a couple of paintings.  I forgot to mention that I also moved my palette to the other side of the room to my french easel and am standing to paint.  It is something that most art schools suggest and I think it helps in many ways...to keep the blood flowing and also to keep you range of motion freer and the ability to back up and look at your painting from a distance.  I really want to stick with this routine.  I am also posting at 5:45 in the evening instead of 10 o'clock at night!  Hope your day has been a good one!  Thanks for the wonderful feedback about yesterday's post!

SOLD All Mine!

SOLD All Mine
12" by 12" original oil on wrap around canvas with sides painted.
325.

Have you ever found yourself avoiding something you used to look forward to doing like nothing else in your life?  Well, for about a year now, I have been finding myself wanting to paint less and less and have procrastinated in all kinds of ways, to avoid heading to my studio.  I passed it off as a result of feeling pressured to paint daily and having done it for six years now and also that I needed to spend so much time marketing and doing the other jobs of a full time artist who wears all the hats of the business of making art.  After sharing my angst with friends...endlessly...I have really patient friends, beating myself up, and prayer...I think I have had a bit of a breakthrough.  I took a wonderful workshop last month with Gloria Coker who advised me to start painting from memory the things that were important to me and rely more on intuition and allowing the process to unfold...kinda like life.  When we let go of trying to control outcomes and let things evolve...we can be happily surprised.  It takes faith...that there is a higher power that guides all areas of our life when we let go!  After taking a bike ride today which was also good advice from a friend...not to enter my studio until I had done some sort of exercise, I STILL procrastinated before leaping into painting.  Once I did though I felt like I had taken the lid off my internal pressure cooker!  I painted and time flew.  I cranked up my tunes like Ella Fitzgerald and painted  this cow totally from my imagination and I am sure memory of many cows I have done before but when I finished there was
a much greater sense of accomplishment than I have been feeling in a long time.  Don't get me wrong...I have had enjoyment while painting over the past year but I felt like a child who refused to go to bed and finally falls asleep exhausted.  I would finally get the paint going after so much angst that I would be exhausted after one painting.  Today I completed three and feel great!!!  It might not seem like that big a leap for some people but for someone always worried about doing the right thing...it was big.  The cool part is that it started as a black and white cow and thought I would make the background light and it just sort of led me elsewhere!  Thanks for listening to me ramble.  Hope you had a day full of fun surprises too!

Swan Up Close

So Demure!
5" by 7" on gallery wrap canvas
$150.

Yeah, it's the weekend!  I'm so excited to have all my boys here for the weekend.  Had a great day of painting today.  I spent the morning painting with Scott London, of London Square Gallery.  I worked on a large elephant painting that I had such fun doing and it is almost finished.  I hope to post it tomorrow.  I am exhausted after working on it!  Hope you have a great Saturday!  Contact me at normasart@cox.net if you have any questions for me...oh, I would have posted this yesterday but blogger was down.  I had fixed the size of two photographs on the side of my blog and now they are too big again!  I think they must have returned all the blogs to a previous time before I had made the changes....too tired tonight to fix them.  Nite nite.

Say Cheese!

 Say Cheese!
10" by 20"
375.

Just loved the pose on this hare.  Not exactly a picture phobe!  I had fun with this format which is larger than some of my daily pieces.  It will probably head to my gallery unless he finds a good home
this week!
Today was a great day...my youngest came home from college!  He had a crazy amount of laundry and a big appetite...sound familiar!  It was also his 19th birthday so his brother came for a celebration and it was wonderful.  My middle son will be home this weekend so I will be in heaven having all three of them here again.  Life is good.  I must remember to get some pictures...sometimes I forget to do that!
My kitchen project was finally completed in time for his arrival and his response was...looks like
something from the Home And Garden channel!  I have trained him well!  I am pleased.  A little
paint, changing out the hardware and a few accessories and it feels like new.  The wallpaper was very
busy and in the nineties was tre chic but sadly was very outdated.  After getting this posted,  I must
get up to my studio and focus on painting again!  Thanks for stopping by and hope your week is going great!

Taking A Bow!

Taking A Bow!
8" by 8" original oil on panel
 225.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant,
gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking
so that other people won't feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine, as children do.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously
give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear,
our presence automatically liberates others.
a return to love - marianne williamson
I love this quote every time I read it.  I thought it appropriate with the name of todays painting!
So take a bow! Let yourself shine and share that light within you!  Have a wonderful day....thank you
for stopping by! :-)  Please contact me at normasart@cox.net if you have any questions about this or
any of my other paintings!

Seeing Colors

Seeing Colors
11" by 14"
$325.

There is no doubt that the two things that draw me to a subject is the way the light is hitting it and the colors I see reflected.  I remember when my first art teacher began to describe the colors that were on
an apple that I was painting and she began naming every color in the rainbow...I responded that I only
saw red!  It took awhile but soon I began to see colors!  When I would close my eyes at night...I was seeing colors.  It was like a part of my brain woke up and it was pretty exciting.  I think it a matter of
focus and if you have a black dog or white shirt and you get in different lighting you will see all the colors that are reflected in light and in shadows.  I LOVE color and so I try to exaggerate the colors I
see and have so much fun doing it.  Today I was at Harbor's edge with my class and did a demonstration using two palette knives and one brush for just the eyes.  I have painted this cow before but in a different format and using all brush work.  Sometimes it is fun to revisit a subject and change
things up.  Hope you have a wonderful weekend.  Not sure yet if I will post tomorrow but if I don't,
have a wonderful Mother's Day!

Pet Commission Demonstration

Pet Portrait Demonstration
Scroll all the way down to the beginning stage...

Step 5
When I looked at the painting for awhile, I didn't like the shape in the background surrounding his right ear and also the line of highlights going down under his left ear.  I worked the background a bit more and softened the line that was distracting me and I am pretty pleased.  I will look at it again tomorrow with fresh eyes and see if it need tweeking.  Painting an all black animal can be really challenging and it is why I suggest to my clients that they photograph their pet outside in the sunlight in the morning or late afternoon when the sun will show some shadows and highlights.  The reference I used was pretty much lit from above but it worked out.  If you are interested in having your pet painted, contact me at normasart@cox.net.  I also offer gift certificates for Mother's Day or some people tell their Mom's that a work is in progress!

Step 4
I apologize for the shiny photos below.  I had been taking them on my easel where I work and have a light above.  I finally got a clue and took the painting downstairs to the area where I usually photograph.  I am on a learning curve for doing demos!  Now I continue to add details and push both my darks and lights which I have lost a bit in working the painting.  It is time to take a break and then look for awhile.

Step 3

Now I added in some more details such as the tongue and area surrounding the moth and added some cerrulean blue highlights as well as bringing some cobalt purple into the dark areas of fur.
Step 2

Next, I zero in on the eyes to make sure the placement is correct and also develop some of the middle areas lighter highlights.  All of these steps help me form the face and I really continue to draw this way.  I decided to put the background in early and had decided to do the color of sand as this dog loves the beach!.

Step 1
I usually begin my paintings with a wash of color.  This one, I began with a light coat of burnt sienna.  I use both positive and negative space to begin finding my subject and start to block in the darkest areas.  Since this is a black lab, I really have to squint to find all those areas.

Memories of Connemara, Ireland

Memories of Connemara
11" by 14" acrylic on wrap around canvas

Last week I worked on this piece while I was with my students at Harbor's Edge.  One of the ladies said I should stop and not add another thing so I decided to post it and share another place in Ireland that brings back special memories of my childhood.  I visited several times while growing up and stayed with my Mom's very large family.  On one visit, My Aunt Una, took us to the west of Ireland which has a very rugged beauty. It is part of the county of Galway. It was a very special time spent with my Mom and her sister.
Now to that unnamed Rooster......

AND THE NAME CHOSEN IS...

......Shine The Light On Me!

Once again I was overwhelmed by the response that I had to draw a name and I used random.org to choose!  This one was submitted by Ann Tynes.  Thank you Ann!  I also want to thank Jerry, Maryann, Nancy, Rae, Sharon, Kathryn, and Claudia C.  If I forgot anyone, I am really sorry.  I got a flurry of responses on my blog and on facebook so I hope I got all of them!  Some of the name suggestions were Bright Eyed And Bushy Tailed, Cock Of The Walk, Center Stage, Shine, I'm Gonna Let It Shine, Lovely Light, My Feathered Friend, Ernesto, Barnyard Bill, King Of The Roost, William The Great, Robinson, Handsome In Pink, Yes, I'm Wearing Pink- Wanna Make Something Of It?, Cogburn, Cockeral, Gallus, and Gallo.  I wasn't kidding when I said I had gotten a bunch of good names.  You may see a rooster in the future with one of these names!  Thank you again.  Hope you have a great day and if you have any questions about a painting, contact me at normasart@cox.net.

Scarlet Tanager SOLD

Scarlet Tanager SOLD
6" by 6" original oil on panel
125.

I have had so many great name possibilities for my last posting and I promise to pick one out of a hat tomorrow!  It has been an amazing and very busy weekend.  It began with dinner with friends on the water in Norfolk Friday night and my good friend Roxanne Steed had just come into town from Mystic, Connecticut to do a palette knife demonstration at London Square Gallery.  She worked on a painting of a still life of daisies in a blue vase and orange slices.  It was so fun to watch her in action!  I always come away with new inspiration and things I want to try.  She told her favorite white is Cremnitz white and had a large tube that she passed around.  It is a lead based paint and it was SO heavy!  I can't wait to get some and compare with the whites I have been using.  One thing she really likes is that it sets up in a day and that is great news as white is one of the slowest colors to dry.  I also love the box she had her palette set up in and it is the one that Carol Marine says is her favorites...Art Box And Panel.  All this fun news may be kind of expensive too but I have been looking for a good set up to paint outside. :-)
When I came home after my visit and demonstration, I got back to working on the house.  I have been motivated to fluff the nest and get these jobs finished before Andrew comes home for the summer.  I painted moulding, shampooed carpets, did some more purging, and cleaned up for studio...that seems to be a weekly necessity these days.  Anyway, when I looked at the rooster, I realized that I need to post about all the fun names I got and will do that in the morning.  A bunch of people gave me names on facebook and sent me e-mails and in the comments.  It is so much fun!  Hope you had a wonderful weekend. I have been getting commissions and new painting ideas so I know I will be very busy in the studio! Contact me with any questions!  If you are interested in this painting or any others you can purchase using the Buy It Now or email me for other options.  Have a great week!
