"Donkey Approach"

I saw this and had to share. I am obsessed with my phone! Not sure what I think I will find every time I obsessively look at it. Maybe I need to go for a hike and leave it at home. Lol Hope you do something fun this weekend and I will get out and do the same! 😊

Annabell

"Annabell"

© Norma Wilson, original oil on canvas 12"by 12"

400.

From dogs to sheep...a wooly proposition. :-)  I took my time away from the easel to rest and regroup and could not stay away from portraits for very long. Whenever I paint a cow or sheep it takes me back to Ireland and some of the best memories of my childhood. They are so beautiful surrounded by an amazing pastural setting. I did see bunches of cows when on my birthday weekend this month in Charlottesville, Virginia. White ones like I saw so often in Ireland so I imagine they will make their way onto my easel shortly. Hope you are staying safe today with all these crazy storms.

All Lit Up!

All Lit Up!

© Norma Wilson, original oil on canvas 20"x 20"

Such a busy week in and out of my studio. The past two days it was great to see the sun shining and everyone out and enjoying the beautiful weather. I have seen a surge in the numbers of students coming to art class and people now thinking about the holidays and giving art as a gift to loved ones.
This week, I completed a pet portrait of a beautiful lab mix named Roxy. She is fourteen years young and loved very much by her human mom, Molly. Here she is before and after. There is still time to commission your special portrait for the holidays. My email for more information is normasfineart@gmail.com I work from your photos and you can send them to me digitally.

Home Sweet Home

Custom House Portrait

This painting was commissioned by a lovely young bride
who wanted to give this gift to her husband on their anniversary.
It is their first home together and they must leave it.  Their pups were added in and she was very pleased. I had a ball doing it. I remember as a child, one of my favorite things to draw and paint were houses. I am quite the nester and spent my life as a military spouse so we got the chance to live in many nests. It was always a new challenge and adventure. There is something very special about that first home together. I am wishing many happy adventure for this new couple as they share their lives together!

Seeing Triple!

Seeing Triple!

© Norma Wilson, oil on canvas 20 by 20

Available Through Gallery

One of this week's exercise in my Working In A Series class with Lisa Call was to Create spatial depth and one of the possibilities was by overlapping elements in the design.  I originally had the idea of over lapping cows in more of a "ghost like way" but instead it morphed into three cows and I was really excited about the turn that my series took in both color and form!  Can't wait to see where it goes from here.  I highly recommend this class if you are intrigued by working in a series.

Yesterday, I attended the new documentary called "Matisse, Exhibition On Screen" and it was wonderful.  I was familiar with a couple of his works but really had no idea of the depth and breath of his work spanning more close to sixty years.  I learned so much and found the movie to be both inspirational and very entertaining.

Just for giggles, check out the tap dancing cow below. :-)

Starlit Bovine by Norma Wilson

Starlit Bovine

24" by 24"

Available Through Gallery

Week one of my my class, Working In A Series with artist Lisa Call.  To begin this piece, I first did an underpainting of random acrylic colors.

Then I did a loose quick drawing using white paint.  And in the next phase began finding all the dark values.  I used a mixture of sap green and alizarin crimson for the background.  I left some of the acrylic to show through in places which added interest.

At this point, I usually forget to continue taking pictures because I get really into it!  I start to work the midtones and some of the lights to develop the sense of light that I love to capture.

I am loving how much I am learning in this class and look forward to sharing more paintings in my series.  Hope you have a great weekend!

Thirty Paintings In Thirty Days! - Day Fourteen

Sweet Bella!

2.5 by 3.5

Today was a super busy day which began with an oil painting class that I teach at Town Center.  We did a paint along and then I had an acrylic class to teach at the Oceanfront.  When I came home I got back to painting after dinner.  I had hoped to post my painting from this morning which is an 18 by 24 but after working on it for awhile, I realized that I didn't want to rush it so that left me with a painting to do for my challenge.  I chose a baseball card size canvas and got to work on my favorite subject...a sweet cow named Bella.  After awhile, I realized I was holding my breath...hopefully tomorrow won't be quite as rushed. :-)  This will make a nice study for a larger piece.  I will repost in the morning after taking a less shiny picture in the daylight.  I only realized today that my mailing list was not receiving my blog daily blog posts for the entire challenge so far!  I took care of the problem which involved an email of mine that went inactive.  So sorry for the lapse.  Have a wonderful day!

Twilight Glow!

Twilight Glow
18" by 24" original oil on wrap around canvas with sides painted
595.

I love to paint subjects that are bathed in late afternoon light.  I makes everything flow and enhances the
beauty as can be seen with this lovely bovine who is a kaleidoscope of color!   I had a wonderful couple of days painting in my newly updated studio and it felt great! I had worked on this cow awhile back but gave her an update using the transparent oils that I have become such a fan of the that really made her glow and come to life.  I am sold on them!  Hope you had a great Wednesday!  Tomorrow is the start of the Boardwalk Art Show.  I went for my evening bike ride down to the boardwalk and saw all the tents going up and paintings being hung.  This year I can take my time seeing the show a little each day!  Thanks for visiting!

The Next Chapter

NFDP

So what could Rip Van Winkle and I have in common?

After posting 30 paintings in that many days since January, I too needed a good long nap!  I didn't quite sleep as long as 'ol Rip did but I did enjoy a couple of wonderful naps in the middle of the day with a lovely breeze blowing up from the ocean!  It was delightful!  I also gave my kitchen a much needed cleaning and left it sparkling with cleared off counters and fresh red zinger iced tea brewing.  Caught up on the laundry, mulched the flower bed, & spent time day dreaming about the next chapter...
With all this creative energy flowing again, I started a different painting project.

A chalkboard for my kitchen!  Tomorrow I will work on the frame and show how it looks hanging.

Next I painted a metal star for my garden shed wall.  It is a really pretty turquoise blue but isn't showing up well. I know...can't keep me away from the paint!

And my Android was beyond repair so I bought an IPHONE!  It is truly a
thing of beauty and a joy to behold!  Any favorite apps you would like to share? So far I have discovered Evernote which is good for capturing all those web sites, articles, photos, etc that you want to keep all in one place like a virtual notebook or scrapbook and I also heard of one that allows you to photograph and document and fax it to someone.  I am going to take a class at the Verizon store next week so I am sure I will be learning a lot more.

I have heard back from Delilah Smith who won April's free painting giveaway.  She really wanted a cow so I will be sending this one her way tomorrow!

As soon as I hear back from May's winner, I will let you know.  If you have not
signed up yet for my newsletter to be eligible for the next free painting giveaway, please sign up at the top right of my blog!

While I am feeling a bit like Martha Stewart, I thought I would share a tip I learned on Facebook that vinegar is good for killing weeds in your garden or in the cracks of the sidewalk.  Much better than Roundup and harming so much of nature!
Have a wonderful Tuesday!

You Lookin' At Me?

SOLD
 6" by 6" oil
You Lookin' At Me?

This piece is one of my favorites that has been posted before but whenever I look at this face, I smile.  As I had every good intention of painting today but instead found myself back at the doctor's...I decided to post this little guy and get some rest.  So it is more antibiotics, inhalers, and lots of fluids and I will be covered in paint again very soon!

Valentine Kitty

Valentine Kitty  SOLD
6" by 6" original oil on wrap around canvas with sides painted

Fast forward to challenge # 131 from Carole Katchen's 200 Great Painting Ideas For Artists.....which is to invent or exaggerate colors to create a more exciting design.  I chose to paint a cat from a reference of a black and white kitty and I actually made the photo completely black and white so I could just look at the values...the lights to darks and used mostly red to describe them.  It was pretty frustrating at first but then it became fun.  I thought she made a great Valentine Sweetheart!
Tomorrow I will be dropping off three paintings to the Artists Gallery in Virginia Beach for their One Foot Squared Show which opens this Friday and runs through the month.  I hope you will come out to the opening which begins at 6:30 and goes until 8:30.  It is a beautiful gallery on Norfolk Avenue a couple of blocks from the oceanfront.  Thank you for stopping by!

Cow On The Loose SOLD

  Cow On The Loose  SOLD
4" by 4" original oil on wrap around canvas with sides painted.

  • This little piece was done as a study for a bigger piece.  I worked on it using a small palette knife and that is what gave it so much texture.  Hope your Monday was a good one!  We have been busy getting Andrew ready to go to college.  I did spend time in my studio today starting three more pieces so I will have more to post this week.

                                  Beach Magic!

6" by 6" original oil on canvas board

“Don't grow up too quickly, lest you forget how much you love the beach"
                                                                                                                  -- Michelle Held
We spotted this little girl on our trip to Savannah and took her picture so I could paint her. It is so
wonderful to relive the magic that children feel when they are at the beach and they spot a shell or a
sand crab or just get themselves full of sand while making sand castles or bury one another.  Perhaps
it is the intensity of the experience or the way they become immersed in the moment......

I have been really getting paint all over me the last few days and quite a bit on canvas too!  It has
been fun painting from my inspiration while away and I also experimented a bit with new canvas board
that I got at Jerry's Artarama.  I really enjoyed working on the surface and I think they will look great framed or propped up on an easel.
Have any of you ever heard of catfish noodling?  Just when you have heard everything....think again!  You have to watch this short video of how some people catch catfish!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOjA8Puh1BM  Guess there are lots of things for this yankee to learn yet!
Hope you have a terrific day!
