One Of My Favorite Tools In The Studio

One of my favorite tools in the studio is this signing tool. It is a wipe out tool by Kemper. The rubber tip pushes away the oil paint and reveals the color of the canvas below. I especially like when I use it when I have tones the surface of the canvas with red. It works best when you complete a painting in one session or sign before it is completed. As I worked on the painting above in stages, I used an oil pen instead.  I used an oil pen above which are another nice invention. Another option is the old fashioned way of using a fine pointed brush and some paint to do the job!

One of this week's exercise in my Working In A Series class with Lisa Call was to Create spatial depth and one of the possibilities was by overlapping elements in the design.  I originally had the idea of over lapping cows in more of a "ghost like way" but instead it morphed into three cows and I was really excited about the turn that my series took in both color and form!  Can't wait to see where it goes from here.  I highly recommend this class if you are intrigued by working in a series.

Yesterday, I attended the new documentary called "Matisse, Exhibition On Screen" and it was wonderful.  I was familiar with a couple of his works but really had no idea of the depth and breath of his work spanning more close to sixty years.  I learned so much and found the movie to be both inspirational and very entertaining.

I love painting "alla prima", which means all at once.  Or at lease finishing a painting in one day.  It is a challenge to work the paint while the layers are still wet but it also is very gratifying and a great sense of accomplishment.  It is one of the things that draws people to paint outside.  You have to work quickly before the light changes and the paintings remain fresh and the impression of the moment is not lost.  I like to work in my studio using photos for inspiration but feel the same excitement.  I have been enjoying this challenge of so many paintings in such a short period of time as it helps me to not over think my subject choices as well.  The point is to get in there and paint!  Even if it means you find yourself wearing the paint quite  bit!

It was so good to get back to painting today after a time away in Lynchburg catching up with a dear college friend.  We reminisced and laughed and at times it seemed like it was just yesterday that we walked to class together.  I came back and saw this mother and baby calf that I started long before I moved here to the beach and with my refreshed eyes, I decided to bring them to life!  I love those transparent oils and the light I am able to capture using them.  Hope your summer is going well so far.  It was good to get a bit of relief from the extreme heat of the last week.  I forgot to tell Andrew to water my plants so they were looking pretty stressed but I had a few cucumbers!!  It is amazing how delicious they are when you grow them yourself!  Thank you for checking in with me!

In spite of the heat in my studio, I still had a great painting day working on three different pieces. This one is a sweet little painting and it was great fun to paint. I will be posting the other two in the next two days. The air conditioning people are coming tomorrow. Yeah! It has been kind of nostalgic the past few days sleeping with several fans going to move the air a bit. The dogs have managed to find the coolest spots in the house.....one of the closets and my office! Well, it is time to clean up my brushes and organize a bit. Hope you are staying cool! Today was a busy day with errands all morning. I got a new battery for my camera and it is working now. It was my first new battery since I got my camera four years ago! I worked on my commissioned piece of three children on the beach in pastel. It is coming along nicely. I also finished a pet portrait commission and did this racoon.
