Rose

Rose

© Norma Wilson, oil on canvas, 20" by 20"

895.

This was my first time painting a rose and it was quite a challenge.  I painted a smaller rose with my

class and it was a little more loose and impressionistic.  I wanted to do a larger size as I enjoyed it so

much.  I can't do puzzles to save my life but love to piece together details in more complex

subjects.  It must be a different skill but it always mystifies me.

All the animals were napping before their trip to Norfolk Academy for the upcoming art show.  They

will be ready to view on April 25th if you live locally and want to attend the show.  I will post more

details soon.  Hope you have a fabulous weekend!!

Thirty Paintings In Thirty Days! - Day Thirteen

Big Bear!

6" by 6" original oil on panel

150.

I am never quite sure what the next day will bring.  I teach all day tomorrow so I may be doing a baseball card size painting tomorrow...perhaps a cow!  This can get pretty intense when you don't paint more than one on quite a few days.  But it is good discipline!  I even worked out which is my other discipline that I am developing.  Thanks so much for checking with me!  Have a great day!

Thirty Paintings In Thirty Days #21

Ducky

5" by 7" original oil on canvas

150.

I love painting "alla prima", which means all at once.  Or at lease finishing a painting in one day.  It is a challenge to work the paint while the layers are still wet but it also is very gratifying and a great sense of accomplishment.  It is one of the things that draws people to paint outside.  You have to work quickly before the light changes and the paintings remain fresh and the impression of the moment is not lost.  I like to work in my studio using photos for inspiration but feel the same excitement.  I have been enjoying this challenge of so many paintings in such a short period of time as it helps me to not over think my subject choices as well.  The point is to get in there and paint!  Even if it means you find yourself wearing the paint quite  bit!

Norma Wilson Original Acrylic Red Hibiscus Floral Portrait

Red Hibiscus

9" by 12" original acrylic on board

These tropical beauties are a favorite among many gardeners.  I remember my first introduction to them on a trip to the islands many years ago.  Our room had bowls filled with water and hibiscus floating in them.  It was such a pretty display and they would stay pretty all day.  Hope your week is going well.
Thank you for stopping by!

Norma Wilson Original Acrylic Irish Cow Cattle Farm Animal Painting Art

Irish Dairy Girl
12" by 12" original acrylic on panel

Having fun with acrylics again!  It can be a welcome change to switch mediums now and again as it challenges you in different ways and keeps things fresh!  Yesterday I picked up my remaining paintings from the Nansemond Suffolk Show and was very pleased to learn I had sold four.  I also sold a couple in the Norfolk Collegiate show.  If anyone who purchased at these shows are reading this...thank you!  Everyone who gives one of my paintings a home helps keep me in my studio doing what I love!  Hope your week has been a good one.  We had a very noisy night of rain and wind and it sounds like further north will experience it as a blizzard.  Stay in and stay warm!  Thanks so much for taking the time to stop by!

English Robin Taking A Break Bird Art Aviary Painting

English Robin Taking A Break
6" by 6" original oil on canvas
150.

Ever had a dream that you could fly?  I have had them and they are AWESOME!  I flew over England at night in one of my dreams...flew right by Big Ben!  Some times I am indoors in a room with a really tall ceiling.  O.k., maybe I am a bit odd but sometimes I envy birds and the freedom to soar through the sky.  It just looks like so much fun.  Lately I have been having these dreams more often...wonder if there is any kind of deep meaning?  I love these little plump colorful robins.  They are my favorite birds  and they always make me smile!  Hope your weekend is off to a great start and that you are doing something fun.  I am meeting a friend for lunch to catch up and then taking some paintings to be framed for a new gallery that will be representing me at the beach called Stravitz Gallery.  Yeah!  I hope to do more larger pieces for them.  Whenever you see a small painting that you like but might like to see it in a larger size, just send me an email at normasart@cox.net for a price and we can work out the details.  I can also do something from your photograph or idea too!

Bluebird for You! Bird Painting Aviary Art

Bluebird For You!
5" by 7" original oil on panel
150.

I love the bright colors of a bluebird and I have painted them often.  He looks proud puffing his chest out for all the world to admire!  Today was a much better day for ducks and geese with quite a drenching of rain that we very much needed.  My cucumbers are soaking it all up! :-)  Thanks so much for checking in with me!

Coneflower Dance Floral Painting Still Life Flower Art SOLD

Coneflower Dance
5" by 7" original oil on panel
150.

SOLD

I loved how these flowers seemed to be dancing in the sunlight!  They were really fun to paint and I did
several stages again.  I would have liked to show one more stage but I get really immersed in it and forget to stop.  My plan next time is to set a timer to bring me out of my "right brain" trance!
I wasn't sure if I would be blogging at all tonight as the storm is messing around with the internet connection.  I will try to type fast while I have it!
We have two winners for last month and this month for the free painting giveaway.  I have not yet heard back from them but will let you know their names and show the paintings that they will be receiving.  Perhaps they are without internet too tonight!

To begin this painting I first made a grid in pencil to help me with placement of the flowers.
I used a transparent Indian Yellow to do a quick drawing.

Next comes the colorful crazy looking stage.  I block in the whole painting using only transparent oils. Some of the colors I used were indian yellow, orange oxide, brown oxide, caribbean blue, red oxide, and doxizine purple.  Next, I should have photographed an in between stage but the end is the one shown above where I have used both transparent and opaque oils to fill in the painting mixing whites and grays and yellow in the petals.  It all mixes together nicely giving it a nice glow and the violet gray of the background helps to offset the bright colors of the flower!

Today was a great art day with a sale this morning, a call from a gallery telling me they have a prospective buyer for one of my paintings, and someone else inquiring about a commission and four new subscribers!  Hope you were able to stay cool with this heat.  I am so grateful to have air conditioning!  Have a wonderful Sunday!

Virginia Sea Gull Original Oil Bird Seascape Art Painting

Virginia Sea Gull
8" by 8" original oil on panel
225.

I photographed this piece in three stages today to show the progression.  Wish I had taken on when I had it loosely drawn in but didn't think of it.  I though I was working on a gessoed panel but discovered with I was a ways into it that it was clapboard.  It is much more absorbent so it was a lot more like working with fast drying acrylics than oils.  I like how it turned out though and liked the challenge!

Stage 2

Kind of have to go backwards here but at this point I was blocking in the colors with opaque paint.

Stage 1

After loosely sketching this fellow using the space around him to help me draw as well as the actual form, I think used transparent oils to block in the color.  I used the rose color up top to help make the blue water a bit cooler and to peek through and a warmer carribean blue down below.  The bird has both ultramarine blue and dioxizine purple in the darker shadows of the bird and indian yellow in the body.  These colors did not mix as much as they normally would because of the clay board but it
gives you the idea.  Then I just start adding the colors in using a gray and white to mix with the transparents and also my favorite blue, Charvin's St. Remy Blue.  Whallah!

I sent off my newsletter today so if you have not signed up you can do so above!
Have a fantastic Friday!!

If you live locally and would like to know how you take painting lessons with me, just send me an email at normasart@cox.net!

Irish Spring Calf

Irish Spring Calf
16" by 20" original oil on wrap around canvas with sides painted
595.

My friend, Barbara, sends me pictures of her neighbor's cows in the spring and this is the latest.  I had done a small study of her face but really wanted to capture her in her full body stance with those strong legs that she is quickly growing into and the wonderful curious look on her face.  I do love these cows with the sun shining on their beautiful white faces!  Hope you do too!  Have a fantastic Monday!

Norma Wilson Original Oil White Kerry Cow Painting Art

Today's post is of one of my favorite Irish Cows that I first saw in Kerry. It is a 12 by 12 on wrap around 3/4 inch sides which are painted making framing optional. It is currently on auction on eBay. Hope you are all having a great weekend! I saw my son off to college with his puppy, Brewsky today. The house seems empty tonight. The other dogs disagree. They are enjoying the peace and quiet and not having their tails bitten! Tomorrow will be a busy day of straightening house and lots of painting. I have two commissions to complete and a new one to paint for eBay. Life is good! Take care and remember to laugh! Click to Bid!

Irish Cow Cattle Animal 2

Today's post is another one of my favorite white Irish Cows. This one is also 16 by 20 which is a different format that I am trying. It would make a nice companion piece to the other white cow which has a couple of days to go on auction on eBay. This one listed this evening. Hope you all had a nice day on the 4th of July. It was a lovely day here....today was much hotter and stickier. There were oodles of fireworks around here. They can be purchased legally over the border in North Carolina! Have a great day and thanks as always for checkin in!
