"Donkey Approach"

I saw this and had to share. I am obsessed with my phone! Not sure what I think I will find every time I obsessively look at it. Maybe I need to go for a hike and leave it at home. Lol Hope you do something fun this weekend and I will get out and do the same! 😊

Norma Wilson Original Oil Giraffe Animal Mammal Wildlife Portrait Painting Art

Tall Beauty!

©Norma Wilson, original oil, 6" by 6"

SOLD

Such soulful eyes. Along with thousands of other people, I became captivated by April the giraffe who was due to give birth any minute....for about two months. It is hard to pinpoint exactly when a giraffe will give birth and they had a camera fixed on her every move every day. I found myself watching for hours. I realized that it was kind of like meditation being so focused and there was no sound. There were many times when everyone thought it had to be time because she had all the signs but there were many false alarms. When it did happen, it was well worth the wait. Giraffes stand the whole time and hide their discomfort because in the wild, they could be attacked and their baby eaten. And we think we have it rough! Taj arrived being almost six feet tall and under 100 pounds. He was standing within the hour. Incredible. I now have a much greater appreciation for these beautiful faces and how majestic and strong they really are!

"Robbie"

SOLD

This little Cairn Terrier lives in Florida with his family. Remember Toto from the Wizard of Oz? Same breed. He is quite adored and it is easy to see why.  His "Mom", Sharon, especially liked this pose as is makes him look thoughtful and serious. Thanks for challenging me with all that fur and for being my model!

Painting #5 Thirty Dogs And A Cat In Thirty Days Challenge

"Beagle"

400.

When I googled the top ten dogs in America, I found that beagles are among those ten. They are a smaller breed similar to the fox hound and are known for their amazing tracking abilities. What amazed me was when I read in wikipedia that Snoopy, the famous cartoon character is a beagle. I guess I hadn't thought about it before.

Painting #4 of Thirty Dogs And A Cat in Thirty One Days Challenge!

Griff

Another cutie with lots of hair and a big personality. Hope Jan likes how I captured her little one who was a pleasure to paint! I am having a great time with the challenge. It is pretty intense at times especially when I won't be able to paint four days this month but totally worth it. My studio is filling up with so many precious faces. I need more though. Would you like your pet featured as part of my challenge??

My fur baby wanted in on the challenge. After all, she is my studio assistant and fair is fair. This little gal is fourteen years young and definitely rules our home. She has her little quirks like raiding the trash and has a thing for shoes. To all who have been impacted by the shoe thing, again, please accept my apologies. She barks at all the neighborhood dogs and longs to chase all runners and people on bikes but she is always happy to greet me when I am away and lays near me when I paint. I love that sweet face. :-)

I'd love to paint your fur baby! Send me an email at normasfineart@gmail.com and you can be a model for my challenge!

All Lit Up!

© Norma Wilson, original oil on canvas 20"x 20"

Such a busy week in and out of my studio. The past two days it was great to see the sun shining and everyone out and enjoying the beautiful weather. I have seen a surge in the numbers of students coming to art class and people now thinking about the holidays and giving art as a gift to loved ones.
This week, I completed a pet portrait of a beautiful lab mix named Roxy. She is fourteen years young and loved very much by her human mom, Molly. Here she is before and after. There is still time to commission your special portrait for the holidays. My email for more information is normasfineart@gmail.com I work from your photos and you can send them to me digitally.

Custom Pet Portrait In Time For The Holidays

Your Pet In Oil

These are just a few of the pets I have painted over the years. It is one of my favorite things to do. I have been an animal lover my whole life and was fourteen before I was able to talk my Mom into getting me my first dog. I have had several since then as well as a cat, hamsters, guinea pigs, turtles, fish, etc. So when I paint your pet, I look to find their spirit in the photos you send and as the painting develops, I find that it is like having them in my studio and it is such a delight. I do hold my breath a little until I hear back from you that you are delighted and that my efforts to capture your sweet pet have been successful. I am so grateful to all my collectors who have entrusted me to paint their pet or one of a loved one!

The process begins when you send me your favorite photos. Photos taken outside are best. It is good to send several and decide if you just want a portrait of the face or more of a full body pose. We decide on a size and then you send half as a deposit. I get started and when I am finished, I send you a photo of the painting. When you are thrilled with the results and it is dry enough to ship, you send the balance. The turnaround is anywhere from a month to six weeks depending on how many commissions I am working on. I named this post about being in time for the holidays so we can have plenty of time to have things ready! Contact me at normasfineart@gmail.com to get started on immortalize  your furry friend in oil!

Staying Inspired With Your Painting

Sheep On Red

10" by 10"

Shown larger to see possibilities if you would like to commission a larger piece that is similar.

I spent a few days last week painting with my good friend and fellow artist. I am always inspired and filled with renewed desire to paint bigger! So I will be painting larger pieces in the coming weeks and will be painting some still life as well.

Do you ever feel stuck in a rut with your art? Painting with a friend is one of my favorite ways to shake things up. Sharing favorite colors, mediums, artists, upcoming workshops, and just watching another artist can be so helpful. It's also helpful to have a fresh pair of eyes to critique your work.
So go set up a paint date!

Starlit Bovine by Norma Wilson

Starlit Bovine

24" by 24"

Available Through Gallery

Week one of my my class, Working In A Series with artist Lisa Call.  To begin this piece, I first did an underpainting of random acrylic colors.

Then I did a loose quick drawing using white paint.  And in the next phase began finding all the dark values.  I used a mixture of sap green and alizarin crimson for the background.  I left some of the acrylic to show through in places which added interest.

At this point, I usually forget to continue taking pictures because I get really into it!  I start to work the midtones and some of the lights to develop the sense of light that I love to capture.

I am loving how much I am learning in this class and look forward to sharing more paintings in my series.  Hope you have a great weekend!

Custom Pet Cat Portrait Original Oil Painting Art

Mokie
16" by 20" original oil on canvas with sides painted

SOLD

Such a sweet face on this kitty.  I thoroughly enjoyed working on this commissioned portrait.  It made me remember my own little cat that was with us for fifteen years.  Mokie was enjoying some sunbathing when his owner got this picture. The tablecloth was made by her grandmother.
I have been super busy lately working in a gallery in Norfolk part time called Harbor Gallery on Colley Avenue and also working on commissions for the holidays.  I am excited to have my work in the gallery and also at Stravitz Gallery at the beach.  Thanks so much for checking in with me!  I plan on getting at least another post in this week!
