One Of My Favorite Tools In The Studio

Goose Goosey Gander

© Norma Wilson, original oil on canvas 11" by 14"

One of my favorite tools in the studio is this signing tool. It is a wipe out tool by Kemper. The rubber tip pushes away the oil paint and reveals the color of the canvas below. I especially like when I use it when I have tones the surface of the canvas with red. It works best when you complete a painting in one session or sign before it is completed. As I worked on the painting above in stages, I used an oil pen instead.  I used an oil pen above which are another nice invention. Another option is the old fashioned way of using a fine pointed brush and some paint to do the job!

Often, I am drawn to dramatic light contrasts and loved this gull's proud looking
stance.  I am pleased with painting and the soft colors seen in the shadows.  Hope you are having a wonderful day!  So happy you stopped by.

Norma Wilson Snow Scene Cardinal Bird Landscape Painting Art

Winter's Magic

11" by 14" original oil on canvas

395.

This piece was December's demonstration for my oil group.  It was a nice subject to paint for the holidays.   Last night, I watched White Christmas which has been my tradition since I was a child. Something so magical when they pulled back the stage doors and it was snowing!  I still hope for
snow on Christmas!  Have a fabulous week!

Thirty Paintings In Thirty Days #21

Ducky

5" by 7" original oil on canvas

150.

I love painting "alla prima", which means all at once.  Or at lease finishing a painting in one day.  It is a challenge to work the paint while the layers are still wet but it also is very gratifying and a great sense of accomplishment.  It is one of the things that draws people to paint outside.  You have to work quickly before the light changes and the paintings remain fresh and the impression of the moment is not lost.  I like to work in my studio using photos for inspiration but feel the same excitement.  I have been enjoying this challenge of so many paintings in such a short period of time as it helps me to not over think my subject choices as well.  The point is to get in there and paint!  Even if it means you find yourself wearing the paint quite  bit!

Norma Wilson Original Oil Marsh Sea Gull Water Bird Painting Art

Evening Marsh Gull
16" by 20" original oil on canvas

595.

The gull has become one of my favorite subjects to paint since moving near the ocean and I loved painting the marshy grasses!  I will be painting larger pieces in the coming weeks to get ready for
a special Ladies Night event at The Barnes at Hamilton Square on September 18th.  They will
be featuring my paintings that night in a beautiful old barn that has been renovated and made into a tasting room.  There is a gorgeous stone fireplace that goes all the way to the rafters.  I hope you will stop by if you live in the area!  I will share more as I get the details.  Let me know what other subjects
you think I should paint.  I just finished a horse that I met in a field up that way and will be posting him soon.  Hope you have a wonderful week!  Thanks so much for stopping by!

For whatever we lose (like a you or a me) its always ourselves we find in the sea.
                                                                              e.e. cummings

I first saw this fella last year when walking on the beach at dusk which I believe is the most enchanting time at the beach when the sun is coming down and everything is lit by the most beautiful glow.  It is a peaceful time and the sea gulls seem to like it too!

Bluebird for You! Bird Painting Aviary Art

Bluebird For You!
5" by 7" original oil on panel
150.

I love the bright colors of a bluebird and I have painted them often.  He looks proud puffing his chest out for all the world to admire!  Today was a much better day for ducks and geese with quite a drenching of rain that we very much needed.  My cucumbers are soaking it all up! :-)  Thanks so much for checking in with me!

Norma Wilson Original Soft Pastel Goose Bird Landscape

Today's post is an a 14 by 17 pastel that is done in many layers on archival sanded paper. My first love in the art world was soft pastel and I still do many pet portraits in this medium as I can get such realistic effects for fur and feathers. I love these geese that are all around here in Virginia. This one was at the Botanical Gardens here in Norfolk but I only have to look out back to see them landing on the lake behind my house.
