   I loved the expression on this little bluebird and enjoyed working on his fluffy little body.  I have also been loving working the background using the palette knife as it seems to suggest the texture of nature surrounding these little creatures!

   What an awesome weekend so far, with a workshop yesterday with an artist whose work I have admired for years, Gloria Coker!  We all met at London Square Gallery and got set up.  She began with a demonstration in a large sketchbook using black india ink and white paint.  After working out

the compostion and values she then had us begin doing the same with the image we brought to inspire us.  Mine were a red pair of shoes.  I will share some of these photos tomorrow.  Scott London took pictures and has not uploaded the afternoon session yet.  Anyway, then she did a demo using color of a pair of dancers.  Anyone who knows her work is familiar with her wonderful colorful dancers who seem to dance across the canvas!  I love how loose her work is and the way it leaves the viewer to use their imagination to fill in and interpret the story.  I hope to be using the techniques I learned this week and will share more of those images with you!  Hope you have had a fantastic weekend and survived the storms yesterday.  We mostly had rain and lots of wind in my neighborhood but I know it was rough in other areas.  Thanks so much for checking in with me!

Purple Martin

Still swooning from my WONDERFUL birthday but managed to get a couple of paintings finished and feel my painting slump easing up a bit. I have been getting more requests for birds so I painted my first purple martin. You know I love color so this one fit the bill. I also love them because they eat one of my least favorite insects....the mosquito! We sure get a bunch of them here in Chesapeake and our trips to the Outer Banks always have really pretty purple martin houses for sale along the side of the road.
I will be finishing those sunflowers....they died while I was away and I am going to get a new bunch to paint and to share with my painting class at Harbor's Edge this Friday. Hope your week is off to a great start! Thanks for still checking in with me even though I have not been posting as often!

I find that I am still enamored with birds and have been getting requests for more! I have painted some songbirds this week and tonight returned to one of my favorites...the English Robin. They just look so friendly and happy! I enjoyed my day today with Brewsky home for a visit. He is one of my labrador "grandpuppies" who has calmed down a bit now that he is three years old and he kept me away from my easel this morning for a bit because he was curled up next to me with his head on my lab....how could I get up and ruin the moment! Sometimes a painting just seems to paint itself and this was one of them. It was a joy to paint and I am really pleased with the colors and the feel of the piece. It was great getting back in my studio today and getting back to work! I stopped first at Jerry's Artarama and picked up some paint and canvases. I also got some free DVD's to watch of some of my favorite artists at work. It is a great deal if you have not checked them out. You can keep them out for 2 weeks without giving them a deposit but they keep your credit card on file in case you lose one or don't return them.
Tonight is Andrew's last soccer game of the season. The weather is nice so it will be great sitting
out in the bleachers. Sean and his dog Brewsky began their trek along the Appalachian Trail today with friends. I wish I could observe some of the antics I know they will be getting into. Brewsky is in his element and even has his own doggy backpack. My other son, Patrick, is picking them up when they get forty miles along and will bring them back. They were going to try to do it for ten days but one fellow got a job and another had an opportunity to go on a trip.

I have really been enjoying painting birds lately. I think I just have spring on my mind. All is in bloom here with profusions of azaleas and dogwood. Last week I purchased a new canon powershot camera with 10 megapixels and this is my first painting to be photographed and posted using it! I am SO pleased with it as the pictures are so much clearer and it is so compact! I can fit it in my jean pocket and take it every where! Hope your week has been going well. I had a lovely evening at Harbor's Edge where I teach on Fridays. They had their annual April In Paris dinner and art show. It was a delicious dinner and fun to see everyone's work all framed and on display. It made me want to come home and paint which I did! Tomorrow I am going back to Cobbs Creek, Virginia for a follow up workshop with Dorothy Fagan. I'm really excited about it. I loved painting this little bird as I love color!!!

It was really cold tonight at Andrew's soccer game. They lost. Next one is Thursday night. I did manage to do a painting today of a sweet little finch that is very common in Britain and around other parts of Europe. I loved his subtle color and markings and had fun painting him! Since my taxes are ready to go to the accountant and I am all caught up with errands, I should be able to spend much of my day in my studio tomorrow painting! Yeah! Hope your week going great. Can you believe we are half way to the weekend again? Today was a beautiful sunny day here in Chesapeake. We had five straight days of rain without let up. Guess all the spring flowers are happy. This little guy really took on a whimsical quality as I painted him. I think it is his stance. He really looks like he is on the stump and giving an important speech. Too much late night Larry King Live for me, I suppose. Well, it was another great day of shipping, organizing my studio some more, and teaching this afternoon. My student, Kathy, worked on a lovely landscape with herons in the marsh grasses. It reminded me of our trip there last week. Hope your day is bright tomorrow and full of fun and whimsy!
