I have been REALLY busy preparing for two big events coming up this weekend. Today I completed painting, varishing, wiring, naming, pricing, and cataloging twenty two pieces of art for my show in Onancock, Virginia at The Red Queen Gallery. I haven't posted any of these pieces. The opening will be on Saturday from 3-6. The show will be up until August 25th. I hope you will be able to stop by if you are in the area. 

The second event is Paint Night at the Richard Stravitz Gallery on 30th Street and Atlantic Ave. in Virginia Beach. We will be having a great time with drinks, hors d'oeuvres, and creativity oozing from our brushes. Our subject matter is...surprise, surprise! A Cow!  Today I was toning our canvases red so we will be

off to an exciting start and ready for my students to begin their paintings. I often tone my canvases before beginning a painting. Sometimes I choose red and other times, I might just do a very abstract looking undercoat with all kinds of crazy color. It helps get me in the painting mode and some times makes for a more interesting painting with little bits of unexpected color showing through. 

So, I am a big fan of toning and I also think it takes away that feeling for beginners of all that white canvas yet to cover. Come join the fun and if you can't join us, grab a brush and some paint and decorate a canvas!

Busy day today back from a three day trip up to Pennsylvania to see my two Aunts.  One is 91 and the other is 94!  I met my sister and we also spent time with several of our cousins that we don't get to see nearly enough!  It was a great visit and we laughed so hard and reminisced about years gone by...

Today I was dragging a bit.  Not sure why driving in the car for hours can be so exhausting but it is!  My friends, Adele, and Claudia came over to paint with me and that is always great fun.  We also walked around my little garden and shared ideas for future plantings.  I am really enjoying these paintings on paper.  I am also loving painting horses!  Hope you have a great day!

    When I looked at this fella who I had shared the biking trail with the other day, the song Happy Trails came to me from years ago watching Roy Rogers and Dale Evans with my Dad on Saturday mornings.  I am really dating myself but I loved those times spent with my Dad and the song as hokey as it is..has a fond message.  Both my parents are no longer with us but we need to make all the trails happy ones until we meet again....

      I have been away from my studio for a few days as my son has been home from college and
I have been spending some time with him.  There is always a game on and a few of his friends
so I like to take advantage of this time with him around and enjoy all the fun!  I did take some
time to ship out paintings to collectors and get supplies unpacked.  I have a commission to
work on this week of an angus cow that I am looking forward to and also need to work on some
pieces for an upcoming show at the beach.  I sold a painting at the opening of the Artists Gallery
show, It's Raining Cats And Dogs and the show goes through the month so stop by and see all
the wonderful paintings and support the local animal shelter!
      I am so excited that it is time to set the clocks ahead....that means more daylight and evening
bike rides!  I have been itching to get out and get some exercise but my foot is still swollen and

Rollikin Rooster Ray

     I really had a blast working on this rooster today.  I got into my studio before lunch with a board toned with hot pink and got started.  I was inspired to do this piece by a photo my nephew sent me who is living in Japan. He took the picture near the city of Nara in central Japan, in a town called Tenri, along a hiking path called "yama no be no michi" which means "side of the mountains path". They say its the oldest hiking trail in Japan. The rooster lives at a temple called Isonokami Shrine, which is dedicated to the sword of the legendary first emperor if Japan. I thought it was beautiful and would make a nice painting.  I am really pleased with how it turned out.  I have been doing my last few paintings on this museum board and really like how the paint moves around on it!  It can be easily framed, or displayed on an easel which I will be posting tomorrow when they arrive!  Each of my small paintings will come with its own display easel!  If you purchase this piece today, it will be included.  :-)  If you have any questions, please email me at normasart@cox.net. 

     I am also working on challenge # 135 which is to Paint Reflections On The Surface Of Glass, from Carole Katchen's book....200 Great Painting Ideas For Artists.  I haven't done one in while cause I had a bunch of other ideas of my own but I should be able to post this one in the next couple of days.  I'd like to see and post other artist's paintings who do this challenge with me!

It is almost midnight and the cat and dog have given up on me and went to bed without me but I was determined to get this one posted.  This is challenge 82 of Carole Katchen's book 200 Great Painting Ideas For Artists....Paint your Pet.  This is my little tabby cat Rusty Girl who has been very sick but is bouncing back very well.  She was so hungry tonight that she tried to claw her way up my leg while I was painting....patience is not her virtue.  Anyway she was not a hard challenge as I have painted her before and found good homes for her likeness...she has that familiar face!  If you are interested in pricing information on this piece or another one of my paintings, contact me at normasart@cox.net.

All Lit Up!

Hope your weekend was awesome.  I am late in posting today as my wireless router kept going in and out.  Think it is time for a new one.  Then I remembered I had an ethernet cable!  Sometimes the old fashioned way comes in handy.  I had a great weekend of time spent with friends and doing some things around the house.  I have been keeping my weekends as days off and painting only during the week and so far that is working out pretty well.  Sometimes you need time off even from work that you love doing!  I am excited to tackle more challenges this week and also to be featured on in the Daily Painters Cafe with fellow artist Catherine Rehfeld. The rabbit has represented hope of the Chinese people for a long time. It is tender and lovely. The moon goddess Chang'e in Chinese legend had a rabbit as her pet, which stimulated the thought that only the rabbit was amiable enough to match her noble beauty. The Chinese character 'Tu' (rabbit) is part of 'Yi' (escape or leisure) indicating speed and distance. The Han people have a custom that a pregnant woman is not allowed to eat rabbit meat for fear that the child will be born with a harelip. The newborn is given paintings of children and rabbits representing that the child will have a peaceful and happy life.

I loved that the rabbit is a symbol of hope!  We all need to have hope and to be reminded that there is always hope where there is life!  The new year is a great time to be reminded of this and to focus on being kind to ourselves each day.  Thanks for checking in with me and for all your wonderful comments.

Border Collie At The Fair

This little collie had just given a VERY impressive show to all the onlookers at the Chesapeake Heritage Art Show that I attended a few weeks ago. Her job was to herd the sheep that were brought to the fair by local farmers. It was amazing the course she had to follow and how she got the sheep to do exactly what she wanted them to do at each gate. After wards she was

I had a great time this past weekend doing the show at Jerry's Artarama. I did three paintings while sitting at my booth and this is one of them. I have been enjoying acrylics as a change of pace and like the fast drying time too. Hope your Monday went well.
