Geraniums Find A Home

Geraniums In The Sun

SOLD

In my last post, I promised I would share how stretching is helping me with my art.  Actually it is helping in both physical ways like getting up and down and doing the work of managing my studio but also metaphorically of stretching how I view myself as an artist. How much time do I want to spend making art? How do I want to market my work and where do I see myself in my dream life ten years from now. I am working at expanding that vision. Being sedentary and stiff is not good for an artist's soul...or  mind.  Success in this area of reaching the floor, has helped to give confidence that I can stretch and grow in all kinds of ways.  Who knows where all this stretching will take me? What ways would you like to stretch in your life?

That though the radiance which was once so bright be now forever taken from my sight. Though nothing can bring back the hour of splendor in the grass, glory in the flower. We will grieve not, rather find strength in what remains behind.
William Wordsworth

I have been taking a bit of time off to spend time with my son before he goes back to college.  The summer has been great having him home!  I will be returning to posting more often soon!  Hope you have a great day.  Thanks so much for taking the time to visit my blog!

Sunflower Rhapsody! Floral Still Life Painting Art

Sunflower Rhapsody....
setting the stage!

This piece will be a two or three part process...depends on how much I get finished tomorrow.  Today I sketched it in and then worked with transparent colors establishing my lights and darks.  I have used both yellow and violets as they are opposite on the color wheel and create visual excitement in a painting! I will also be contrasting some blues and oranges for the same reason. You can already get a feel for the sun coming in and hitting this arrangement as it sat on my dining room table.  I hope your day is a good one and that you can check back with me tomorrow!

#144 Tulips Serenade
9" by 12" original oil on 3" gallery wrap canvas

I do love red!  And tulips...a perfect combination.  I spent some time in the garden today planting some more lilies that Claudia brought the other day and planting my Shasta Daisies.  My herbs are growing nicely and the cucumbers and strawberries.  The weather is so wonderful this time of year.  Not too hard to keep things growing and happy.  I will have to be vigilant when the heat of summer arrives.  Hope you have something fun planned for the weekend.  I plan on heading to the beach one day to sit in a chair and do nothing...just for a couple of hours.  So happy you stopped by!

#141 Daisy Day!

#141 Daisy Day!
5" by 7" original oil on panel
150.

Today was a daisy day.  I planted some shasta daisies in my garden and had them on the brain.  I had painted a daisy in this cobalt vase before but wanted to do one with the transparent oils and working it a little more loosely.  It was fun!  Also planted some portulaka and some cucumbers.  Went to another yoga class today.  We did a pose where we were seated and one knee up.  We were supposed to put one arm around the front of our knee and reach for our other arm that was behind our backs....wow.  Quite the humbling experience as I struggled to even get my arm around my knee.  But we are encouraged to work our own practice and find our personal edge or wall as the case may be.  I do know that I feel great afterwards and I am in the right place!  Hope you have a fantastic day!

#132 Tulip Rhapsody!

#132  Tulip Rhapsody!
6" by 6" original oil on panel
150.

Hope you all had a lovely Mother's Day!  I spent the morning having brunch with two of my sons who live in the area at Rockefeller's on Rudee Inlet.  We ate outside and watched the activities on the dock.  Even watched as my camera lens cap floated down into the water.  Oops.  I wasn't allowed to hold my camera or my phone for that matter after that.  We came home and I took a Mother's Day power nap and then began painting.  This flower is from my friend, Barbara Lively Mastaglio's garden down in Norfolk. I love the rich colors of these tulips and the new transparent colors helped capture it in oil.  Here are a couple of pictures from my morning that I wanted to share with you.  Miss Bailee's new hairdo is the first.

She wanted to go to brunch but had to stay home. :-(

The view at Brunch...should have included the water!

We all agreed this looked like a pretty fun place to live!
"Sleepless In Virginia Beach!"

Have a wonderful Monday!  I am committing here to go to yoga tomorrow! One day at a time and I will build the habit! :-)

#121 Painting Flowers In My Studio

#121 Painting Flowers In My Studio!
20" by 20" on wrap around canvas

As the sun colors flowers, so does art color life.  ~John Lubbock

My friends, Claudia and Adele, came to paint in my studio today and we decided to paint a floral using flowers from Claudia's garden and a vase I had on hand.  It was fun as always to see what we each painted.  I do not have this one cropped intentionally because it is not finished but I wanted to stay true to posting a painting each day. When this piece is completed it will be put straight into my available works.

#115 Pink Geranium

#115 Pink Geranium
8" by 8" original oil on panel
225.

Today we went to Stoney's which is a local nursery that has the most beautiful flowers and herbs. They also have very creative ways to display your flowers and wonderful containers.  They will have things planted in old chairs and antique sewing machines.  I even saw geraniums growing in a military ordinance box. I was bitten by the gardening bug again when my friend, Claudia so generously gave me some some day lilies from her garden and some rosemary.  Today I picked up some gorgeous pink geraniums for a large pot and some bay leaves and lavender.  Another benefit of growing a garden is being able to paint your flowers and it is always a great learning tool to paint something from real life.
Who knows what I will paint tomorrow...most days I don't have a clue until I get into my studio.  Saturday evening is the opening of the Norfolk Academy art show and I am excited to have four of my paintings in the show.  It goes from 6 to 8 and is at 1585 Wesleyn Drive.  If you are local, I hope to see you there!  Have a great Friday!

Hydrangeas In My Window!

Hydrangeas In My Window
16" by 20" original oil on gallery wrap canvas
$595.

Earlier in the week I shared a photograph of hydrangeas cut from my own new little garden and I said I felt a painting coming.  Well, on Friday when I paint with my friends at Scott London's gallery in Norfolk I began painting them!  After taking a couple of days off to spend with family and friends, I returned to my studio and had a wonderful time finishing it up.  They are my very favorite flower and a are a joy to paint!!
I am so excited that I finally go down to the beach over the weekend.  A friend of mine had a birthday and we went to Mahi Mah's restaurant on the beach and had a delicious dinner followed by drinks outside listening to a concert.  Perfect evening!  I also had a great evening yesterday with my oldest son and his girlfriend who came for dinner.  I hope you had a great weekend too!  It surely was a hot one around here but earlier this evening we had a big thunder storm.  I am not sure if it helped to cool things off yet.  I am looking forward to a busy week ahead painting and also taking time to get out and scout out new inspirations of things to paint.  Thanks for checking out my latest work!!

Sunflowers In My Window!

Sunflowers In My Window!
4.5" by 5.5" on illustration board
$95.
Comes with a white double mat that makes it
8" by 10"

It is almost midnight and I am still in my studio trying to wrap things up.  I did my first video demonstration today and the difficulty was not in doing it but uploading it and trying to figure out how to configure it and get it uploaded into a format that I can put on my blog and youtube.  I don't have any narrative but would like to add music.  My head hurts from thinking about it all so I think I shall get a good nights sleep and think about it tomorrow!  It was terribly fun to do and I feel a great sense of accomplishment in doing it.  It is something I have wanted to do for about a year now!  Hope your day was filled with fun and that you had a sense of accomplishment too!

I wanted to share my studio transformation that I wrote about a few posts ago.  Thanks so the efforts of my good friend Lena who is an organizing genius!

Lovely Iris

Lovely Iris

6" by 6" original oil on gallery wrap canvas with 1 and 1/2 inch sides painted.

Today's post if a painting that I have shown before but last night as I was
working in my studio, I saw it and decided to put it on here again.  It is one of my favorite flowers and one of my favorite paintings.  I really enjoyed painting the many folds of the iris and the combination of brush and palette knife.  I had also gotten a new color that I used in the background.  It is sort of a grayed out green that makes the flower pop. Hope you like it too!  Have an awesome day and thanks for checking in!

Purple Iris  SOLD

6" by 6" original oil on gallery wrap canvas with 1 and a half inch sides painted.
What desolate place would be a world without a flower! It would be a face without a smile, a feast without a welcome. Are not flowers the stars of the earth, and are not our stars the flowers of the heaven.

Norma Wilson Original Oil Sunflower Bouquet Floral Still Life Art

Sunflowers Aglow Stage 1

14" by 18" original oil on wrap around canvas with sides painted

Today was a day filled with many activities but not as much time in my studio as I had hoped so this painting is going to be completed in stages. I decided to photograph the progress rather than not posting again! I sure have had a lot going on lately and have an exciting trip planned for a few days this week to celebrate my birthday and to see Michael Buble in concert so I will not post again until Friday unless I have time tomorrow evening. The sunflowers will have to wait to be finished to completion. If you are interested in purchase information on any of my works, contact me at normasart@cox.net. I will have my blackberry with me while away.
I have been in a bit of a funk painting wise....I know other artists can relate so if anyone has any suggestions or painting inspiration ideas...please drop me a line. I am hoping my time away will give me new perspective and you never know.....maybe I will be painting Michael Buble! Tha's not a bad idea.....
